Time for a Closer Look

Learn about Medicare for All, Saturday, June 24th at 11 AM, Upper

Arlington Library, 2800 Tremont Road. With bills for universal

healthcare pending in both Congress and the Ohio Legislature, it is time

to look at this option more closely. What exactly is it, and how does it

work. All are welcome. Free.

Dr. Brad Cotton, an emergency room physician for 40 years, has seen

the hardships that people face who have no insurance, or insurance that

is far less than adequate. He is passionate about health care justice

for all, and educating people about what is possible.

Join us to protest the secrecy surrounding the Senate health care bill

SPAN members will join a coalition of faith groups and unions which have organized a protest action to call on Senator Portman (said to be the lead Senator rewriting the House Health Care bill). The lack of transparency of this process is shocking, as is the expected transfer of money from Medicaid funds to tax breaks for those who don't need them.

Tuesday, June 27th at 5:30 PM on the West Side sidewalk (High Street) of the State House.

You can also leave a message for Senator Portman at    866 828 4162

Walk for Health Care

HEALTH CARE  WALK

SATURDAY  MAY 12, 2018

 10:00 AM

Meet at the Trinity Lutheran Church Community Center, 2031 W. 30th St., Cleveland, a couple blocks from the West Side Market. (Across Lorain Ave. from St. Ignatius, behind the Wendy’s. Parking is available off W. 29th St., South side of Lorain Ave.)

This is a fundraiser for SPAN Ohio, a non-profit 501(c)(4), and the call for raising money is statewide. Though we are making progress with our two health care bills, if we can’t get them passed in the Ohio State Legislature, our only recourse is a citizens’ initiative which will require money to get done. So, do your best to get as many sponsors as you can for our walk.  Our cause is worth it!

Checks should be made payable to SPAN Ohio (you can have the checks sent to you and you then turn them in, or sent directly to SPAN Ohio, c/o Barbara Walden, Treasurer, 31100 Cedar Rd., Pepper Pike, Ohio 44124.)

Donations can also be made online.   Fill in the amount of your donation, then click either “Pay with PayPal” or “Pay with Credit Card,” which will take you to a new page. Click where the form says "Add special instructions to the seller," then type "To sponsor [ NAME ] in Walk for Health Care." Then fill in the rest of the form and click the “DONATE NOW” button at the bottom.

Join us even if you cannot walk.  Some supporters will remain at the West Side Market area publicizing our cause.

For more information contact Ted Seuss at (440) 590-2427.  (If no answer, please leave a message.)

Mark Dudzic

Mark Dudzic is the National Coordinator for the Labor Campaign for Single Payer.

The primary purpose of the Labor Campaign for Single-Payer Health Care is to increase and coordinate grassroots labor support for a Single-Payer Medicare-for-All healthcare system in America because we believe that health care is a fundamental human right and that the labor movement must take the lead in the fight for healthcare justice.

We work to pass national legislation such as H.R. 1384 (the Medicare-for-All Act of 2019) and S. 1129 (the Sanders Medicare for All Act).

We support viable campaigns for state single-payer reforms in Vermont, California, Washington, Oregon, New York, Maine and dozens of other states.

We promote a broad educational effort in our unions, communities and among all working people about the single-payer solution to our broken healthcare system.

We stand in solidarity with workers everywhere who are fighting for healthcare justice.

Medicare and the Civil Rights Revolution (a one hour movie). The untold story of how the twin struggles for racial justice and healthcare intersected: creating Medicare and desegregating thousands of hospitals at the same time. POWER TO HEAL tells a poignant chapter in the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans. Central to the story is the tale of how a new national program, Medicare, was used to mount a dramatic, coordinated effort that desegregated thousands of hospitals across the country practically overnight. Before Medicare, disparities in access to hospital care were dramatic. Less than half the nation's hospitals served black and white patients equally, and in the South, 1/3 of hospitals would not admit African-Americans even for emergencies. Using the carrot of Medicare dollars, the federal government virtually ended the practice of racially segregating patients, doctors, medical staffs, blood supplies and linens. POWER TO HEAL illustrates how Movement leaders and grass-roots volunteers pressed and worked with the federal government to achieve a greater measure of justice and fairness for African-Americans.
